Text

I. (Angela Cave, 1953)
Our Lady, who is full of grace,
Stood in anguish at her place;
Stood erect beneath the Cross,
Close to Him Who died for us.

What must we, the guilty feel
As beside the Cross we kneel?
Ours the voices of the foe,
Ours the hand that struck the blow.

Help us, Mary full of grace,
To look upon His suffering face;
Then may we closer to Thee move,
And learn to look upon his love.

II. (Gaelic Anon.; tr. Douglas Hyde, +1949)
O Mary of graces and Mother of God,
May I tread in the paths that the righteous have trod.
And mayest thou save me from Evil’s control,
And mayest thou save me in body and soul.

And mayest thou save me by land and by sea,
And mayest thou save me from tortures to be.
May the guard of the Angels above me a bide,
May God be before me and God at my side.

III. (F. le Dorz; tr. Sr. Mary Gertrude, C.S.J.; adapt. R. Rice)
O Virgin all lovely, O Mother all gracious,
O Daughter of God,
O Star brightly shining, O Rose sweetly fragrant,
O Lily pure.
Joyous we praise thee, Virgin all lovely,
O Daughter of God.

O Dwelling of glory, Thou Whiter than ivory,
O House all of gold.
The Word there resideth; Thy God thou adorest
In joyous love.
Joyous we praise thee, Dwelling of glory,
O House all of gold.

O Virgin all holy, Thy soul filled with graces,
O Mother of God.
Be near us in danger; To us make propitious
Thy Son, our Judge.
Joyous we praise thee, Virgin all holy,
O Mother of God.
